Welcome to ajessien.com.
This is the official website of research work
and writings of A J Essien (PhD). The website promotes
research into traditions and beliefs that have become the basis of
scientific theories without adequate empirical investigations. Such
translations of traditions into science is shown to underlie the stagnation of
research in speech and hearing. Areas under consideration are
1) Sound Production and transmission
2) Music production and Perception
3) Auditory Psycho-physics
4) Speech Production
5. Psycholinguistics

The Body Image Theory of Sound: The Foundation of Speech and Music

This paper presents a dramatically different approach to speech, music and all aspects of auditory analysis from the standpoint of sound production. The research work is in review for publication by Journal of Phonetics.  Read Abstract here. Read full text of paper here. All visitors to this website are reminded that research papers posted on this website are copyrighted documents.

The Invariant Mechanical Correlate of Pitch and Tone

Pitch and Tone remain psycho-acoustic mysteries to this day. Ohm and Helmholtz built their theories on the foundation laid by Pythagoras. It has been proved that Ohm and Helmholtz were wrong, but was Pythagoras right? Read latest findings here.

The Paper entitled The Invariant Mechanical Correlate of Pitch and Tone fell outside the framework of articles for the Journal of Phonetics. The Paper is awaiting a more relevant publisher. Read review here.

My Life as a Researcher in Speech and Hearing

This article describes my efforts aimed at some  contribution to hearing sciences, particularly speech and music production, acoustics and perception.

Sound: The Vibratory Image of Matter

The definition of sound in physics as vibrations in the medium portrays sonorous bodies as only physical means to acoustic ends. This paper reveals the inadequacy of this conception of sound. The definition of sound as the vibratory image of the body that produced the sound establishes the missing link between the vibrating body and the listener. Read the draft document here.
